S17: Global Solidarity for Global Justice! Stop TPP & TTIP

Stop TPP & TTIP – Backroom Power Grabs for the 1%! Get Corporate Money Out of Politics!

November 30, 1999 – the people unite to say no to corporate rule at the Seattle Round of WTO talks
September 17, 2011 – Occupy Wall Street is born, joining a global wave of protest demanding popular power.
September 17, 2013 – The global 99% unite to stop TPP, TAFTA, and the global 1% agenda!
**********************************************************************************

On September 17th, 2011, we came together to Occupy Wall Street to resist the destructive impact of unchecked corporate power and greed on our quality of life.

Two years later, instead of responding to the outrage of the 99%, the megacorporations are mounting a counterattack.

Companies like American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC); Halliburton; Monsanto; Chevron; Cargill; Pfizer; Exxon Mobil; Citi; Gap, Inc.; Goldman Sachs; and Wal-mart  –  deregulation-happy banksters, union busters, polluters, human rights violators, factory farmers, outsourcers and sweatshop barons, big box killers of mom and pop retailers, GMO seed pushers, big pharma and war profiteers, have united as the US Business Coalition for TPP to launch a stealth assault on democracy itself – one that will leave our courts and elected officials virtually powerless to reign in their greed-driven attack on the 99%.

What is TPP?

Disguised as merely an international trade agreement, TPP, the Trans-Pacific Partnership is, in fact, a corporate rights agreement, designed to make corporations more powerful than national governments and to roll back generations of environmental and social progress.  TPP is being negotiated between the US, Japan, Mexico, Canada, Peru, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei Darrusalam, and Malaysia with other countries expected to join over time.  TPP negotiations are taking place behind closed doors.  The public is denied access to the negotiating texts of the agreement, but approximately 600 corporate advisers have full access and are using their influence to craft an agreement that will:

-  create a system of global corporate governance that will supersede local, state/provincial, and national law — allowing corporations to appealto unelected tribunals of trade lawyers when our laws prevent them from damaging the environment or selling unsafe products.

roll back and prevent further regulations on the financial industry designed to prevent another financial meltdown, and empower corporations to attack financial mechanisms that reinvest in the 99%, including public banks and “Robin Hood” financial transaction taxes.

offshore even more good-paying jobs to hyperexploitative sweatshops, in the process reducing organized labor’s negotiating power.

disproportionately affect communities of color – forcing migration, violating indigenous rights, exacerbating environmental racism, driving unemployment, and increasing poverty.

attack internet freedom and privacy and threaten freedom of speech

-  limit access to livesaving generic drugs and medical procedures and to kids.

increase corporate control of our food – lowering food safety standards, eliminating bans on genetically modified Frankenfoods and dangerous livestock drugs, and globalizing industrial plantations and cruel, polluting animal factory farms, while wiping out farming communities.

endanger ecosystems, wildlife, food, and water by deregulating environmentally destructive mining, oil, natural gas fracking, logging and agriculture.

TAFTA: NAFTA FOR EUROPE

The 1% intend to stop at nothing short of total global domination.  In July, negotiations began on the Trans-Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA – also called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)), yet another 1% attack on the public interest.  TAFTA will expand the job-killing, democracy-destroying environment contaminating, anti-democratic NAFTA/TPP model to a continent of 500 million people, with Europe’s high regulatory standards on the chopping block.
MONEY IN POLITICS: A POISONING INFLUENCE

TPP represents an about-face by President Obama, who in 2008 pledged to break with the NAFTA model and forge a US trade policy that protected workers and the environment.  Unfortunately, US Business Coalition for TPP members were among his top donors in 2012, with companies like Microsoft ($814,645), Time Warner ($442,271), and Walt Disney($369,598) ensuring that President Obama would sing a very different tune once in office.  The same corporations who back TPP and TAFTA for its potential to override democracy in their interest already exploit an out of control campaign finance system that allows corporate interests and the 1% to pull the strings of many elected officials in both major parties.  These corporations intend to use the influence they paid for to ensure that TPP and TAFTA are ratified into law.

The need for national solidarity to get corporate money out of politics has grown more and more evident.  The obscene influence that is wielded by Big Business to see that its agenda is adopted and forwarded by federal, state and local governments is the source of the laws and enforcement statutes that violate all sane rules of socioeconomic justice.  Almost-daily media reports spotlight the erosion of fair elections, fair trade, fair taxation and our heretofore inalienable civil rights corporate money by bought-and-paid for politicians.

Occupy Wall Street stands with a broad coalition of citizens and activist to bring about public campaign financing reform to diminish the influence of corporations over the democratic process, public policy initiatives and our civil rights.  On S17, we will point to TPP as an illustration of how many of our elected officials are betraying our interests in service to their campaign donors.

GLOBAL SOLDIARITY VS.  CLASS WARFARE BY THE 1%

TPP and TTIP are the latest salvo of a policy based on “the rule of the market, cutting public expenditure for social service, deregulation, privatization, and eliminating the concept of “the public good” or “community”[1].”  Around the world, from Turkey to Greece to Brazil people are rising up, taking to the streets to say YES to solidarity, YES to the commons, NO to corporate rule!  History has proven that when we join in solidarity as a global 99% movement, victory is ours!

In 1999, an unprecedented coalition of social movements converged in Seattle to shut down the World Trade Organization‘s Millenium Round talks – an earlier attempt at global domination by the 1%.  Galvanized by protesters in the streets facing riot police and tear gas, WTO negotiators representing developing countries refused to cave to pro-corporate demands from the US and Europe that would have resulted in even more desperate poverty for some of the world’s poorest people.  When the WTO met again inCancun in 2003, it was again met with massive resistance in the streets.  As a result, WTO negotiations have failed to advance significantly since 1999.  In the early 2000s, another 1% power grab, the Free Trade Area of the Americas, fell apart amidst massive popular resistance in Latin America and mass protests in Quebec City and Miami.  In 2013, a united global movement of the 99% can STOP TPP and TAFTA and roll back austerity policies and other neoliberal attacks worldwide!

AUGUST 22-30: TPP NEGOTIATIONS END & THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS

From August 22-30th, during the FINAL TPP negotiating round, we call on the global 99% to put our elected officials on notice that they have until September 17th to express their resistance to the undemocratic TPP negotiating process – or be exposed as nothing more than pawns of the 1% and corporate interests.  Activists in the United States can deliver a letter to your Senators and Representatives, calling on them to pledge to vote against Fast Track Authority for TPP and TAFTA by S17.  Fast Track is a process by which Congress votes to cede its Constitutionally mandated power over trade agreements to the White House, committing to bring trade agreements to a vote “under a procedure with mandatory deadlines, no amendment, and limited debate.”[2]  A Fast Track vote is expected in Congress this fall!

S17: THE GLOBAL 99% UNITE AGAINST TPP, TAFTA, AND CORPORATE RULE

On September 17th, 2013, our 2nd anniversary, Occupy Wall Street calls for a global day of resistance to pro-corporate “free trade” agreements

To our friends in the New York metropolitan area, we call on you to join us!  Attend our general meetings, join our working groups!

In other US cities, organize actions to warn the 99% about TPP, to thank members of Congress who have pledged to vote against Fast Track and to shame Congressional Reps who haven’t by exposing the corporate cash that is influencing them to betray the 99% (Cross-reference the member list of the US Business Coalition for TPP with your elected officials’ contributor list at http://opensecrets.org)

We call on our allies in other TPP and TAFTA nations and in nations that may join these agreements in the future to organize actions and take to the streets on S17 to say NO! to TPP, TAFTA, and corporate globalization and YES! to global justice!

And finally, we welcome the 99% in Brazil and other non-TPP/TAFTA to take to the streets to resist, deregulation, privatization, and cuts to public services!

Please visit http://tradejustice.net/s17forms to volunteer or to register an action and learn more at http://s17ows.org, to read more about TPP, TTIP, global struggles for democracy and against attacks on the commons, and the corrupting influence of money in politics, or to join our email list and learn more about our local organizing in NYC.  If you’d like to speak to someone directly, you can call (347) 676-0717 or email s17@tradejustice.net.

WITH GLOBAL SOLIDARITY WE CAN STOP TPP AND TAFTA, DEFEAT THE GLOBAL CORPORATE POWER GRAB, AND END THE CORRUPTIVE INFLUENCE OF CORPORATE MONEY ON OUR POLITICAL SYSTEM!

On September #29s we return to surround the Congress

Text read at Neptuno Square (next to the Congress of Spain) on September 29th

http://coordinadora25s.wordpress.com/2012/09/29/texto-leido-en-la-plaza-de-neptuno-a-las-20h/

We come back on #26s and on saturday #29s we’re surrounding the Congress again

We would like to invite you to the next mobilisation as it was agreed and called upon by action meeting of Coordinadora 25s and by the spontaneous assembly that took place during the night of 25s in Sol:
  • On wednesday 26th September : Concentration in Neptuno Square (by the parliament), 7 pm.
  • On saturaday, 29th SeptemberSurround the Congressfrom 6 pm.
New calls to action could arise in the next days, we’ll keep reporting.
We don’t have organizational capacity to arrange transport to Madrid for next Saturday, so please, contact local groups which could organize them. You can write to autobuses25s@gmail.com and we’ll publish the list of transports. We will keep you updated in this website.
This announcement was made this morning in a press conference in which we have made a balance of what happened yesterday. You can read the notes or see the video here.
1) Despite the serious incidents of yesterday, we want to convey a positive idea: the massive affluence made 25s a success. Two generations have broken the strong deal cut during the Transition [from dictatorship to democracy] and have generated a social protest without comparison in the recent history of Spain. Whatever happens from now on, 25S will be considered a fresh start.
2) While the Government had been trying to criminalize social protests and portraited the demonstration as a coup d’etat, the reality was different. As it has seen, people of all ages and conditions visualized the kidnapping of democracy, under the excuse of the economic crisis. In fact, this call has been an example of citizen’s political courage to attend despite the government’s intolerable blackmail and fear campaign.
3) In front of a deaf and blind power, we reaffirm our position of non-violent civil disobedience. We condemn the provocation and infiltration techniques that were used in yesterday’s manifestation by the police to dissolve the protest. We are the first ones to regret that the focus on the violent escenes set aside the real reason that led us to the streets, which is no other that the effective occupation of our free capacity of political decision. Before the police charged, the event was non-violent and civic. It was clear that the action did not pursue to interfere in the regular work of the Parliament. The support of some members of parliament and parliamentary groups just proves that the iniciative did not seek, as announced, to literally ocuppy the Congress, but to attract the attention to the fatal distance existing between citizens and their representatives. The damges in several public offices from Izquierda Plural (a political group whose offices are nearby the protest) proves the irrationality of a Government that tries to hide its weakness and absence of legitimacy acting in an authoritarian way.
4) This has not been just a demostration of discontent, but a political statement. It would be a big mistake if, after these events, the Government does not listen these voices and keeps disregarding the desesperation and suffering its measures are causing in the spanish population.
We are still in the streets and we have no fear.

Continuiamo nelle strade senza paura.

#Watch25s The Spanish Congress #25s

Schedule, 12h: Welcome 2pm: Lunch. 4pm: Informative talks on the action 5.30pm: Marches to Sol and Cibeles 6pm: Surrounded the Congress
What:
Do you know why the #25s the Spanish Congress will be surrounded by people?
Twitter: HT internacional #Watch25S and #25s

Source: coordinadora25S

Next September 25th we will surround the Spanish Congress to rescue it from a kidnapping that has turn this institution into a powerless one. A kidnapping of popular sovereingty perpetrated by the Troika and the financial markets, and executed under the blind eye or the cooperation of most of the political parties. Parties that have betrayed their election programs, their voters and all the citizens, not fulfilling their promises and contributing to their progressive impoverishment.

We surround the Spanish Congress after more than a year of intense mobilizations through all social networks, having realized that democracy is not possible when those institutions that claim to be its representatives move themselves by interests that are not those of the majority. Because we have nothing at all to discuss with the powers-to-be that have systematically proved to be blind, deaf and mute when confronted with concrete, fair and just equality and social justice demands. We surround it to rescue politics from an unsustainable and leeching economic règime, such as it is Capitalism.

We surround the Spanish Congress because we want to step forward to social mobilization, placing the focus on the recovery of citizen’s sovereignty and power. This is, democracy. We’ve grown many struggle structures, spaces for sharing and discussing both on the Internet and the public squares, at the neighborhoods and workplaces, and we’ve achieved iniciatives that we want to continue developing on a grassroots base, with no false shortcuts and step by step. Because we believe that the time for a few deciding for the rest is long gone; because opposed to those that want to steal our future, we have the means and collective intelligence to decide and build the society we want; because we need no false brokers, but resources and collective tools that actively encourage the political involvement of everybody in the common issues.

We surround the Spanish Congress this 9/25 to tell those who allegedly command us that we’ve had enough, that we’ll not comply with their unjust dictates like paying their debt, and we’ll defend the collective rights: housing education, healthcare, labour, democratic participation, public wealth. To start a process that stripe of their inmunity those who are responsible for this crisis, to judge the gamblers that created this situation instead of rewarding them.

On September, 25, we’ll demonstrate around the Spanish Congress because we want to retake responsibility over our own future and stop accepting more impositions. To tell those who hold Democracy hostage that their time for leaving is now, and to demand the destitution of this Government as a first step, because we are here to liberate Democracy with a new constituent process. An open process of direct participation in which we determine and set in motion the necessary political institutions, participation tools and legal and political resorts that we need to guarantee that collective decisions ate fully effective. A sustained constituent process which collective definition starts, but doesn’t end, on September 25.

To rescue the Congress is to deliver an invitation to other social movements to organize and join, such as public employees fighting for public services in diverse “tides” and other equality and social justice struggles. It means our refusal to accept fear, impotence and disorientation that grow from the reduction of all politics to economics and its deadly consequences such as fascism, xenophoby, racism or sexism. And to look for a collective solution.

We invite everybody who want to join us in surrounding the Spanish Congress next September 25, to cry “enough!” and continue this path to rescue Democracy and sovereignty.
We want rights, democracy, justice and freedom for all the people.
We’ve taken so much, and we’re not afraid.
We’ll meet this 25S… and far beyond!

Rise up on May 12th, 2012 – We are the 99% #12m15m

On the 15th of October 2011 we took to the streets in over 1000 cities in 82 countries. We got organized and took the first steps on the road to dignity and global change. That was more than six months ago yet we continue to have to raise our voices to make politicians and bankers understand that they in no way represent us. We are united in our demands: the welfare of the 99% must be respected.

Governments only represent us if they follow the will of the vast majority, not just the privileged few.We are united, we are everywhere, we are where you least expect us.

We demand, firmly but without violence: social justice, wealth distribution and an ethic of commons. We condemn poverty, inequality, environmental devastation and corruption as tools of subjugation by the powerful on society.

We will not stop until we achieve our objectives: the 99% will take to the streets again and again until we have a say in the world in which we live. We want global change. Let’s turn the streets into the world’s biggest loudspeaker on the 12th of May.

Because we are the 99%, we are not owned by politicians and bankers. Take to the streets on May 12th!

Join us.

This is a message for all committees of communication of Occupy/Occupii

We are the 99%.

The current distribution of economic resources is such that only the scarce minority escapes from poverty or daily uncertainty. Future generations are condemned to receive a poisoned heritage due to the enrionmental risks undertaken for the very few who profiteer. We demand social justice, we will not stand down in the defense of our rights. Our representatives have the obligation to be guided by our needs; they have to listen to us. Let’s turn the streets into the biggest loudspeaker on earth on May 12th.  Because we are the 99%, because we are not goods controlled by politicians and bankers. Let’s take the streets on May 12th.

As part of the Wgroup of Facilitation of the international meetings for action planning in May 2012 and at the same time as a member of the Action Alternatives and Solutions WG, I would like to share 4 info points:

Our next general meeting related to this subject will be held on Saturday March 17th at 19:00 UTC on the DRY’s mumble  http://mumble.democraciarealya.es/index.php?lang=en

All proposals presented so far by the assemblies have been organized in an schematic way and are available here : http://titanpad.com/proposalfor12and15May
NOTE: This pad will become a cute graveyard of excellent proposals if we neglect our responsibility to study them in our assemblies, that is the job of each one (as I understand it, and sorry if this sounded rough).3) Within this pad there are six or seven simple proposals to carry out in the three ****star days***  of the month of May.
On our last meeting we agreed to spread them, it is understood that it is responsibility of each person to carry out the task. Therefore I am doing my part!
- Return to camp in the squares the 12M or 15M
- Flashmob: standing still (or sitting down)  quietly for about 3 mins. in squares or public places –  in shopping centers, areas of bars, arenas, football stadiums and others but without obstructing the traffic.
-In contrast: Blockades of Public transport means and roads as a measure of pressure, stopping normal traffic
-Alternative to the demonstration 12M Global:  reappropriation of public space
- Actions of civil disobedience: do not pay the meter, not paying at the supermarket,  for water, gas or light, which is compatible with civil disobedience actions in the internet.
- Send mass emails/tweets individually with a single short sentence to a global target
- “MEMORY Action” To produce a documentary or other summaries (pamphlets, posters, collage) Recalling the achievements so far attained by each assembly> region> countryThis list is not an imposition, but only suggestions. They are proposals that came out of assemblies and are now returning to them as queries to satisfy transparency and horizontality.
We hold regular WG meetings (details below) where we can answer questions and receive comments / contributions.

Saturday 18th of February, international mobilization day : #18FGr #WeAreAllGreeks

PRESS RELEASE: #18FGR http://bit.ly/x2htMh

Gracias a vosotros!

When one people is attacked, all people are attacked.

The 10th of February, the non elected Greece Government adopted a new hideous and destructive austerity plan, passed by the parliament (MPs voted 199-101 in favour) on the 12th of February.

The new austerity measures impose a 22% reduction in the minimum wage, which will remain frozen for the next three years; collective bargaining is simply cut; 15000 public sector workers are laid off and 150000 jobs will be destroyed due to the non-renewal of the contract…

The people of Greece is bravely rising up against social terror policies. With the media’s deafening silence, demonstrations, as well as general strikes, become more and more frequent despite the violent repression.
The people of Greece need the international solidarity and they call for our support [1]
Let’s reply to their call. We are all Greek!

Their mobilization is clashing with the wall of an European and international dictatorship, the dictatorship of the financial markets and the troika: EU, ECB and IMF, who have imposed austerity measures and a non-elected government on the Greek.

The EU governments are involved in the dictatorship and they implement measures which are in the same line in the rest of the countries. Greece is being used as a laboratory before generalizing these measures. The situation is going to get even worse due to the new European Treaty project, which will impose the « golden rule » on our taxes.
We reject to sacrifice the people to the money, as do the Greek.

Let’s regain the reins of our lives.

Switch off your computer, join the mobilization!

There will be demonstrations everywhere in solidarity with the mobilization of the people of Greece, Saturday the 18th of February.
